There are few places like Honolulu, Hawaii – a buzzing metropolis with a tropical backdrop. Situated on the island of Oahu’s south shore, Honolulu covers 68.4 square miles. King Kamehameha III proclaimed it the capital city of the independent Kingdom of Hawaii in 1850. Today, the city has a median age of 41.7 (2022), and it’s a major hub for business, finance, hospitality, and military defense.

Honolulu’s scenery and warm weather already give the city a lot of appeal, yet annual cultural and hula festivals, as well as a surfing competition, enhance it even further.

Several major thoroughfares serve the city. Interstate H-1 passes by Maliki, a residential neighborhood just inland of downtown; Nuʻuanu, an upper-middle-class area; and Waiʻalae and Kāhala, upscale districts directly east of the volcanic tuff cone, Diamond Head. The other major highways include the H-2 and H-3.
