Also known as Cardozo/Shaw, or simply Cardozo, the U Street Corridor is a district located in Washington’s Northwest Quadrant. The area is nestled around a stretch of nine blocks, which used to be called “Black Broadway” up until the 1960s.
This, in fact, was the very heart of Washington’s black culture and entertainment scene – but the situation changed significantly from the early 1990s. At that point, following extensive redevelopment and gentrification aimed at targeting the rising decline of the area, the U Street Corridor changed its original looks.
Today, the neighborhood is home to a majority of Latin American residents, and is becoming increasingly popular as a hip, up-and-coming, eclectic area. Despite all the changes that the district experienced, the U Street Corridor was still able to retain most of its original vibe.
The food and drink scene are exciting and diverse – just try a local Forks Food Tour to sample everything from Italian to Mexican food, and all the way to Ethiopian cuisine. And if you are a lover of ice cream, you can’t miss Ice Cream Jubilee, a homemade ice cream shop with an incredible variety of flavors.
With its history, culture, and shopping and dining options, the U Street Corridor is undoubtedly one of Washington’s most thriving and interesting neighborhoods.
