Located at the intersection of Massachusetts Ave NW, New York Ave NW, K Street NW, and 8th Street NW, Mount Vernon Square is a neighborhood that takes its name from the local city square.
The area used to be home to grand, Victorian townhomes, and its beating heart was 7th Street. This completely changed after the Great Depression, when Mount Pleasant experienced a sharp decline – including serious events like riots, arson, and vandalism happening during the Marin Luther King Jr. riots in 1968.
The neighborhood began to pick itself up from the early 1990s, when Washington Metro completed the works on its Green Line and officially opened the Mount Vernon Square station.
Today, the district is a lively, exciting, and up-and-coming neighborhood, featuring Washington’s quintessential combination of old and new buildings, long-established residents and newcomers, and an interesting mix of cultures, ethnicities, languages, and cuisines.
The area hosts the famous Mount Vernon Triangle, an attractive and vibrant hub of business and entertainment, featuring around 60 stores and offering that community feel that Mount Vernon is still in the process of developing.
