Detroit

There’s no place like Detroit: it’s the birthplace of Motown Records, and home of automakers Ford, General Motors and Stellanis North America (Chrysler). Situated on the Detroit River, “Motor City” was founded in 1701. Today, it spans 142.9 square miles and serves as a major port. Its median age is 34.6 (2022), and its main industries include manufacturing (particularly automotive), finance, technology, and healthcare.

Homebuyers in Detroit will spot architectural styles that include Italianate, Second Empire, Gothic Revival, Stick, Shingle, Eastlake, and Queen Anne. The average price of a home is $69,330, up 14.6% over the past year (Zillow, 2022). Detroit’s automotive industry is reflected in annual auto shows, such as the North American International Auto Show, but the city isn’t solely about cars: It also hosts music festivals, folk festivals, and the state fair.

Detroit is connected via I-75, I-94, and I-96. The East English Village neighborhood, just off I-94, offers well-maintained homes in Tudor and Colonial styles. Jefferson-Chalmers near the river features old housing stock, with newer developments on the way, as well as bungalows and Foursquare-style homes. North Rosedale Park, accessible via the I-96, has beautiful homes in Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival styles.

There are many reasons to call Detroit home. There’s new development, growth and community, and locals who become friends for life.
