Civic Center

As the name implies, the Civic Center district of Miami has a concentration of public buildings, including universities, hospitals and government offices. The area is referred to by locals as the Health District since it is home to Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami VA Medical Center, University of Miami Hospital (formerly Cedars Medical Center) and Holtz Children's Hospital.

The neighborhood got its roots as the Health District with the opening of Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1915. One of the hospital’s original buildings, The Alamo, still stands today and serves a living museum of Jackson's history over the years.

The area hosts several educational institutions, including the University of Miami, Miami Dade College and Florida International University. It’s also at the heart of Miami’s growing biotech and medical research efforts. With so many influences, the area is an urban blend of students, faculty and working professionals.

The Health District is conveniently located just north of downtown Miami and just a few miles from the Miami International Airport, both of which are accessible by Metrorail.

Locals like to explore the cultural richness of the area, whether it’s going to the Bayside Marketplace, taking in a Marlin’s baseball game, checking out the art scene at Wynwood, or heading downtown to the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.
