Overtown is a community with a rich and storied history. It was (and is) the historic center for commerce in the Black community in Miami and South Florida, was home to one of the first Black millionaires (Dane Albert Dorsey) and was the place of the original Booker T. Washington high School, the first high school to educate Black students south of Palm Beach. It also holds the distinction of being the second oldest continuously inhabited Miami neighborhood after Coconut Grove. Local residents often go by the name "Towners."
The community boasts several landmarks on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Dana Albert Dorsey House, the Lyric Theater, and three churches. Overton has several parks, including Gibson Park, Henry Reeves Park and Williams Park. For those willing to venture a little further, nearby Margaret Pace Park and Maurice A. Ferre Park provide great waterfront views, walking paths and sports.
With easy access to the professional opportunities of Civic Center District, the art world of Wynwood, and the cultural richness of Little Havana, Overton is in a prime Miami location. There’s always something to do, like explore the MiMo architecture of the Upper East side or partake in the vibrant nightlife of downtown Miami.
