Grand Forks

Grand Forks, founded in 1881, is a city in North Dakota that sits on the Minnesota border. It’s named after the forking of the Red River of the North with the Red Lake River near the downtown area. Grand Forks spans 28.1 square miles with streets lying in a grid pattern. Its median age is 29.4 (2022). Defense, healthcare, manufacturing, higher education, food processing, and scientific research are the main drivers of its economy.

Residential architectural styles, such as Cape Cod, feature in homes in the city, where the typical home value is $260,601, up 9.6% over the past year (Zillow, 2022). Annual events, such as the Art and Wine Walk, Art on the Red, Heritage Days, and the Downtown Street Fair, enhance Grand Forks’ appeal.

Three major highways pass through Grand Forks: I-29, U.S. Route 2, and U.S. Highway 81. The city is family-friendly and offers a variety of housing options. The Dakota Skies neighborhood features single-family homes with fenced-in yards, while Northern Lights Estates suits military families, not only for its three and four-bedroom homes, but its proximity to Grand Forks Air Force Base. Active lifestyles will enjoy White Tail Range, where a walking/biking trail weaves throughout the area.

Home to the University of North Dakota and other educational institutions, Grand Forks is a bustling, vibrant college town filled with friendly people who enjoy a pace of life that’s neither too fast nor too slow.
