Chattanooga lies along the Tennessee River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in southeastern Tennessee. Nicknamed “Scenic City” as a result of its surrounding ridges, valleys, and mountains, the city stretches across 143.2 square miles. It was incorporated in 1839, and has a median age of 36.7 (2022). Its economy is mainly driven by healthcare, insurance, tourism, automotive, and advanced manufacturing.


When it comes to real estate, Craftsman is the most popular style of home in Tennessee. The average price of a house in Chattanooga is $288,861, up 21.5% over the past year (Zillow, 2022). Enhancing its appeal are a variety of annual events, including the Southern Brewer’s Festival, the Chattanooga Film Festival, and the Riverbend Festival, a celebration of music.


Major roadways serving Chattanooga include I-24, I-75, U.S. 27, and U.S. Route 64. The up-and-coming Avondale neighborhood, which straddles Dodson Avenue, is an affordable area that’s popular with families, millennials, and first-time homebuyers. Belvoir, which is adjacent to I-24, is one of the city’s most desirable areas. Convenient to downtown, it’s quaint, walkable, and filled with historic homes. Also near downtown is St. Elmo, a historic district that will suit residents who enjoy hiking, cycling and trail running.
