Newark

Essentially a large basin sloping towards the Passaic River, Newark, New Jersey, is the state’s largest city. Founded in 1666, today it covers 25.8 square miles, and has a median age of 34.5 (2022). In addition to being one of the U.S.’ major hubs for air, rail and shipping, its major industries include manufacturing, printing, publishing, and insurance.

Farmhouse, Craftsman, English Cottage, and American Foursquare are among the home styles that populate Newark, where the typical home value is $421,621. The price is an increase of 10.7% over the past year (Zillow, 2022). The city hosts annual events to appeal to just about everyone: a Cherry Blossom Festival, a Portuguese Festival, the Lincoln Park Music Festival, and Brazilian Day.

Traveling in and around Newark is easy, with access to I-78, I-95, and Route 21. The Central Business District, which lies by U.S. Route 21, attracts singles and young professionals with its condos and apartments. Further north and west of Route 21, the Forest Hill neighborhood is inhabited by retirees and families, who enjoy the space in large Colonial Revival, Beaux-Arts, and Victorian houses. Next to U.S. Route 9 is North Ironbound, which offers condos, apartments, and single-family homes.

Offering a quick commute to Manhattan, Newark is a top spot for anyone who wants access to great jobs, unique restaurants, a growing arts scene, and big homes minus the big prices.
