Bennington

Tucked into the Green Mountains in southern Vermont is the town of Bennington — the state’s first! It was chartered in 1749, and now covers 42.5 square miles. It’s home to the Bennington Battle Monument, which is the tallest human-made structure in Vermont. Bennington’s median age is 45.5 (2022), and it has an economy mainly driven by agriculture, forestry, fishing, healthcare, government, and trade.


Housing in Bennington ranges from historic old-style buildings to modern condos and apartments. Colonial is the primary architectural style, though the town also has some Ranch and Victorian-style houses. The typical home value here is $216,091, up 10% over the past year (Zillow, 2022). Enhancing the town’s appeal are annual events that include Mayfest, an annual showcase of local business vendors, the Bennington Battle Day Parade, and the Garlic and Herb Festival.


U.S. Route 7, and Vermont Routes 7A, 9, 67A, and 279 all serve Bennington. It’s a close-knit college town. Bennington College, Northeastern Baptist College, and satellite campuses of the Community College of Vermont and Vermont Technical College are all here. Downtown is home to the satellite campuses, and amenities that include shops and restaurants. A few minutes outside downtown are neighborhoods that offer homeowners space and large yards, while more upscale properties lie on the edges of town and in its south end.


Several private schools, a large chocolate shop, and beautiful nature round out the uniqueness Bennington has to offer.
