South Lamar

To the south of downtown Austin you will find the artsy and cultured community of South Lamar. An up-and-coming hotspot in the city, on the flip side this neighborhood is known for its down-to-earth vibe. The area has seen exponential growth since the early 2000s, and has become a central hub for shopping and nightlife just adjacent to the excitement of downtown.

Great for nature lovers, South Lamar boasts and array of outdoor amenities as a part of the Barton Creek Greenbelt. Many hiking and biking trails line the western half of the district, going right through the heart of the city. Residents can also enjoy maritime delights via nearby Lady Bird Lake and spend warm days boating and fishing on the pristine waters.

Entertainment options abound in Austin and South Lamar does not come up short, with the legendary Broken Spoke hosting live country music acts since the 1960s. Many stylish pubs, restaurants and art galleries line the block. A newly constructed Alamo Drafthouse complete with 9 theaters play newly released hits and the occasional throwback film. Locals can check out authentic Japanese dishes at Ramen Tatsu-Ya, or have a farm-to-table meal at Odd Duck.

Served by the Austin Independent School District, residents of the area benefit from access to many of the state’s leading public schools. Austin High School, the Liberal Arts & Science Academy, and Zilker Elementary School are all among some of the highest ranking schools in Texas.
