Synergistic Path. Jan founded the hugely successful brokerage firm Brooklyn Hearth Realty Ltd. in 2003, which quickly became a mainstay in Ditmas Park and grew its expertise throughout the borough. Fast forward to 2015, when Erika ventured into real estate sales at Jan's firm, and the duo have been working together happily and productively ever since. Meaningful Journeys. After spending 28 years as a sociology professor at LIU's Brooklyn campus, Jan applied her studies to neighborhood activism and worked to regenerate Ditmas Park. She found local entrepreneurs to start businesses, introduced young folks to the area, and educated co-ops and apartment building owners, ultimately leading her to found ‘Friends of Cortelyou' in 2001. She realized real estate could serve as a vehicle for further revitalizing her community and the Brooklyn urban landscape she calls home, and her passion for the profession continues to this day.
Erika, who bought her co-op in Ditmas Park in 2006, also immersed herself in the artistic and entrepreneurial community that helped transform Cortelyou Road. Prior to real estate, she honed her keen eye and relentless attention to detail as a retail buyer for 10 years and as a set dresser for TV shows and commercials.
