Central New York state’s hub of education and economics, Syracuse, was named after the ancient Greek city in Sicily. Incorporated in 1848, services, research, and healthcare are also major contributors to its economy. Its median age is 31.7 (2022).

Syracuse is served by the north–south I-81, east-west I-90, east-west I-690, and the I-481, which forms an eastern loop around the city. On the northeast side of the city lies the neighborhood of Sedgwick Farms, an affluent area that contains architecturally distinct, large, classic homes. In the city’s southwest, Strathmore offers well-maintained older, residential homes. Just south of I-690 is Westcott, which is filled with single-family homes and two-unit apartments. It’s also known as a Bohemian and liberal quarter, and host of the annual Westcott Street Cultural Fair. Other annual events residents can enjoy include art fairs, ethnic festivals, the Syracuse International Film Festival, and food and music festivals.

Convenience is a major perk of life in Syracuse. The center of the city proper is less than 20 minutes from desirable suburbs, including places like Manlius, Baldwinsville and Liverpool. New York City is about four hours away by car.
