With well-kept yards and a family-friendly atmosphere, Oakland is a desirable neighborhood located in southwestern Atlanta, just southwest across the BeltLine from West End and Adair Park. It is another of Atlanta’s historic areas having been incorporated as a city in 1894 and annexed to Atlanta in 1910. Like many others, Oakland City Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Oakland City’s Historic District features a number of different residential architectural styles. These include Queen Anne, Shingle, Folk Victorian, Colonial Revival, English Vernacular Revival, Minimal Traditional and Craftsmen. If Craftsman is your fancy, you’ll find many to choose from. These big bungalows with front and side gables are the most numerous. Homes range from $84,000 to $650,000 and monthly rent can be found for $900 to $2,700.
One of the largest swaths of green space in the community is the Historic Oakland Cemetery, which has more than 70,000 people interred since 1884. Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With The Wind is buried here as is singer Kenny Rogers, golf great Bobby Jones, and former Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson. Six Feet Under is a popular restaurant near the cemetery or make a quick trip in the Little Tart Bakeshop for some amazing chocolate croissants.
