Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is the result of merging the two neighboring towns of Winston and Salem in 1913. Salem was founded in 1766 and Winston in 1849. The area now covers 134.7 square miles and is known as the “Twin City.” Its median age is 35.9 (2022), and its main industries are technology, finance, healthcare and tobacco.
Winston-Salem’s residential architectural styles include Ranch, Craftsman, Gregorian and Greek Revival. The average price of a home here is $241,129, which is an increase of 21.1% over the past year (Zillow, 2022). Annual events add to the city’s appeal. They include the Winston-Salem Open, the Carolina Classic Fair, and the Bookmarks Festival of Books and Authors.
The city’s major thoroughfares include the north–south I-285, and east–west I-40. North of I-40 is the neighborhood of Arcadia. It’s a popular area due in part for being close to downtown, but new construction is fuelling demand. Olde Vineyard, just off the Salem Parkway, is a safe area with proximity to a park, hospital, and shopping mall. Sherwood Forest is a peaceful community that features plenty of wooded areas and a neighborhood swimming pool.
Locals refer to Winston-Salem as “Winston.” It's a city that continues to grow, while maintaining a grip on its Southern heritage.
