Mozley Park, a Westside neighborhood that sits three miles west of downtown Atlanta, was developed in the early 20th century. It is nestled between I-20 and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The neighborhood was named after Dr. Hiram Mozley, a Confederate veteran and inventor who was the original landowner. After his death in 1902, his heirs inherited the land and by 1922 had asked the Atlanta City Council to purchase the estate. Today, community members have discussed changing its name. Some long-time residents want to keep the original name; others feel offended and are uncomfortable.
Many home are original from the early 1920s and include Victorian cottages and Craftsman bungalows. Most are single family homes owned by white-collar workers who enjoy a quick 15-minute commute to downtown Atlanta. Home prices range from $359,000 to $500,000. Children attend school at Frank Lebby Stanton Elementary, The Kindezi School, and Douglass High School.
Residents of Mozley Park are within walking distance of the popular BeltLine and can walk, run, or bike along its three-mile multi-use Westside Trail that passes through some of Atlanta’s oldest and most historic neighborhoods. It can be found along Mozley Park’s eastern border and connects it to Washington Park and Gordon White Park.
