Encased between Connecticut Avenue, Columbia Road, Rock Creek Park, and Calvert Street, Kalorama is a district in Washington’s Northwest Quadrant. It includes the areas known as Kalorama Triangle and Sheridan-Kalorama. The area’s name has its roots in Greek history, and it means “beautiful view” – a choice made by author and diplomat Joel Barlow, who bought Kalorama’s only estate in 1802, and decided to rename it.
This area is home to many embassies, which occupy especially the Sheridan-Kalorama Historic District, as well as many famous people, including for example Barack Obama (who moved here soon after leaving the White House), Jeff Bezos, and Ivanka Trump.
One of the area’s main appeals – and certainly one of the reasons that have made it so desired amongst the rich and famous – is its architecture. Grand turn-of-the-century mansions are everywhere, in Kalorama, with perfectly manicured lawns adding to their already huge curb appeal.
Naturally, Kalorama is one of Washington’s most expensive and exclusive neighborhoods, and despite its primarily residential feel, it is also very close to the hustle and bustle of some of Washington’s more lively areas, including Adams Park and Foggy Bottom.
