Charleston, the state of West Virginia’s capital city, was founded in 1788, where the Elk and Kanawha rivers meet. Today, it covers 32.6 square miles, and has a median age of 42.1 (2022). Trade, utilities, government, medicine, and education are the main drivers of its economy.

The city’s real-estate market includes homes built in Colonial Revival and Tudor Revival styles. The typical home value is $157,218, up 12.7% over the past year (Zillow, 2022). When heading out for some entertainment, residents can choose from various local events, including the West Virginia Dance Festival, the West Virginia International Film Festival, and the Charleston Sternwheel Regatta.

Major roadways serving Charleston include I-64, I-77, and U.S. Routes 60 and 119. The East End neighborhood, located between the city center and the West Virginia State Capitol near I-64, offers historic homes, and great bars and restaurants. Just across the Kanawha River from the city center is South Hills, where a mix of older and newer homes line quiet, winding streets. The West Side area, meanwhile, lies across the Elk River. It’s an ideal area for families, due to its green spaces, a splash pad, and walking trails.
