One of Washington’s oldest – and most densely populated – neighborhoods, Capitol Hill is home to the United States Congress and the Supreme Court. This is, of course, one of the city’s most popular locations to visit as a tourist, but it is also a much-desired place to live.
Boasting 19th century rowhouses, an exciting nightlife and restaurant scene, and a lively market, Capitol Hill attracts both aspiring politicians and passing visitors.
A very walkable district, Capitol Hill can be explored through its extraordinary visitors’ center – following reservation only. During the tour, it’s also possible to visit Congress or the Senate, if they are in session.
Another impressive structure that characterizes Capitol Hill is the Thomas Jefferson building, part of the Library of Congress. Built in Italian Renaissance style, it features stunning murals and a remarkable reading room that boasts 160-foot-high ceiling.
And after all this history and culture, you can head over to the US Botanic Garden, located at the bottom of Capitol Hill, for a refreshing outdoor break.
