Located right in the core of Washington’s Northwest quadrant, Shaw has long been one of the city’s most prominent hubs for African American residents and businesses.

The area witnessed many riots following the assassinations of civil right leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, as well as marches and protests to achieve civil and racial equality.

The proud, solid African American roots of this vibrant neighborhood are still very visible today, thanks to the area’s food and shopping scene, its cultural venues, and its live music spaces.

The local food scene is just as buzzing, with both residents and visitors flocking to Shaw’s hip and innovative eateries, such as Compass Coffee and La Colombe.

As far as shopping goes, Shaw is home to some quaint boutiques, including the flower shop ReWild, and the many independently-owned fashion boutiques.

Shaw is also a great place to spend a night out: with its sizzling bar and club scene, its popular happy hours, its hipster breweries, and its exciting clubs, the night is indeed very young over here.
