Dayton

Dayton is probably most well-known as being the home of brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright, and as a result, the “Birthplace of Aviation.” In addition to the Wright brothers’ invention of powered flight, the western Ohio city is also known for its many patents, inventions, and inventors. Founded in 1796, Dayton now covers 56.9 square miles, and has a median age of 33.5 (2022). Healthcare, defense, and aerospace are its main industries.


When it comes to residential architecture, Dayton’s historic districts are filled with Victorian, Queen Anne, Jacobean, Chateauesque, and American Foursquare-style homes. The typical home value is $113,454, up 15.5% over the past year (Zillow, 2022). A variety of events keep residents engaged and entertained year-round. These include Restaurant Weeks, the Industrial Strength Bluegrass Festival, and the Sugar Maple Festival.


Major thoroughfares serving Dayton include the north-south I-75, and the east-west I-70. Just off I-75 is the neighborhood of Riverdale, a large residential area that offers single-family and multi-family homes, and amenities that include a playground, splash pad, and paved trails. The adjacent neighborhood, Five Oaks, features charming brick streets, homes on large lots, and access to a medical center. Just southwest, and near downtown and the Wright Dunbar Historic District, is Wolf Creek. Many homes in this area have been built in Victorian and Craftsman styles.
