Birmingham

Welcome to “Magic City!” Founded in 1871 where two rail lines crossed near one of the richest mineral deposits in the world, Birmingham, Alabama, earned its nickname from the rapid growth of its iron and steel industry. It lies nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains over 149.5 square miles, with many suburbs and more green space per capita than any other U.S. city its size.

With a median age of 35.7 (2022), Birmingham has been named by Lending Tree as one of the most affordable U.S. cities for first-time homebuyers, and one of the 10 most affordable markets for renters (Zillow, 2019). The city is dotted with various home styles, such as Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and American Foursquare. The average price of a home here is $112,384, which is up 15.1% over the past year (Zillow, 2022). Events, such as an annual food drive, and the Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama, add to the city’s appeal.

Birmingham is accessible via two highways that run through it: I-20, which runs east and west, and I-65, which runs north and south, making it easy to get into and out of the Medical District and downtown, filled with shops, hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues, museums, and other attractions.

Through world-class medical research, an innovative business climate, and a notable food and arts scene, residents strive to make Birmingham the best city it can be.
