This neighborhood gets its unusual name through the combination of the Tamiami Canal, which flows eastward from the Everglades right by the neighborhood, and Flagler Street, which runs through the center of the town.

Flagami has a wide residential mix of moderately priced apartments, duplexes and neat, brightly colored single-family homes and a population of around 50,000 people, primarily middle-class Hispanics and white Americans.

It’s chock full of small retail businesses, including shopping centers, markets, lounges and supper clubs. Despite having the convenience of restaurants, grocery stores and banks, this area has plenty of access to natural areas, too. It boasts several small parks, including Flaglar Memorial, Bay of Pigs, West End, Antonia Maceo and Charlie DeLucca.

Nature lovers can also enjoy the Mt Nebo/Miami Memorial Gardens or head over to one of several nearby lakes, including the Blue Lagoon, Lake Mahar and Lake Joanne, to partake in water sports.

If you want to kick things up a notch, just jump onto Flaglar Street and make the short drive directly into downtown Miami. Better yet, hop aboard one of the free Metromovers for a clean, relaxing view of the surroundings.

When it’s time to head out of town, the Miami International Airport is just a stone’s throw away.
